The brand new 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid will now be using a lithium-ion battery and its fuel economy has grown from 41 mpg to 44 mpg. The Civic Hybrid is currently in second-place for gas economy for cars that continue to rely on fossil fuels. This improvement in energy economy makes it greater than the Lexus CT 200h. The Civic Hybrid happens to be the most fuel-efficient sedan that you can find on the US streets and highways, according to Honda.
The fifth generation hybrid powertrain system that the 2012 Civic Hybrid employs is called the Integrated Motor Assist, that is an electric motor/generator that is a thin, pancake-type. The device is similar to Ford and Toyota where it supports the gasoline engine by being sandwiched between the transmission and engine. The car could very well be operated by electric power alone, but normally the electric motor assists the gas engine. The car does run briefly on electric power only in selected instances when the Civic Hybrid engine cuts off fuel, but all of the engines parts still move. If the car stops the engine shuts off, and starts up again if it's time to go, like other hybrid vehicles.
With the switch to lithium-ion batteries, the 2012 Civic Hybrid also features a larger gasoline engine than before. Despite the rise from 1.3-liter engine to 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the horsepower from both electric and gas are the same. The engine works by using the electric powered motor more frequently because the engine runs at a lower RPM due to the larger displacement, which results in a quieter ride. Honda achieved maximum efficiency by tweaking the hybrid system like improving the motor output from 15kw to 20kw. Heat is managed more efficiently by using plastic spacers and evenly spaced coils and magnets. The horsepower for the motor has been increased simply by three horsepower to 23 horsepower.
The nickel-metal hydride battery pack has been substituted by the more powerful 20-kw Li-ion battery, which is 5 kw more and 30% lighter. Seeing that the IMA system provides more robust power and the battery is 35% more efficient than before, the Civic Hybrid is able to go all-electric at low speeds. Aided by the change to lithium battery, the problems that plagued the previous battery should now be resolved. Rounding out the IMA system is going to be the steadily variable transmission. It performs a lot like a 10-speed bicycle having a drive pulley and a driven pulley that are linked with a steel belt. It's a blend of a manual transmission together with a conventional geared automatic transmission.
