Air tools - What they are and their benefits

By Lauren Cohan

Tools powered by compressed air are called air tools. Also called pneumatic tools, these power tools were previously not very popular in the do-it-yourself market. However, lately it has become a favorite of professional contractors as well as do-it-yourself enthusiasts.

Air tools are quite efficient and user friendly and mostly less tiring than the usual electrical power tools. If you are constantly using these tools, air tools may be the right option for you. Industrial workers may especially find it useful since they are working throughout the day each day of the week.

Air tools have an air compressor that uses compressed air to power the tool. A piston draws the air in and pumps it into an air reservoir. The pressure in the air reservoir powers the air tool.

There are quite a variety of air tools available. Whether you are looking for buffers or grinders, or jack hammers or chipping hammers, nail guns or stapling guns, or super duty air drills or sanders, you will find almost anything that you need. They are lightweight and operate with a simple on and off switch, making them quite easy to operate.

As mentioned previously, air tools are much lighter than electric ones, and this is why they are less tiring also. This means that the likelihood of accidents is much lower as compared to electric tools. Since they are powered by compressed air and not electricity, there are little chances of you getting an electric shock.

If we talk about the power they generate compared to electric tools, it can be easily said that they are much more powerful than electric tools. These deliver more pounds per square inch (PSI), allowing work to be done much faster and with much less effort. If you are operating it, you will be able to finish the task much faster and will feel much less tired. If you are hiring a worker on an hourly wage, you will be saving on the money being paid to him.

Easy maintenance is another advantage of air tools. Air tools have fewer parts than electric tools. These parts are also not made of plastic but of metals. Use of metals such a aluminum or steel makes these parts of the air tools more durable.

There is another way in which air tools help yu save money. While electrical tools use 240 volts, air tools only use 120 volts. Just make sure that while using air tools you follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and wear safety goggles or glasses while operating them.
