Foyer Decorating Basics

By Cassia Ann Jordan

You need to create a pleasant feel to your home. The foyer, no matter what size it is, says what you want people to think and feel about your home. Paying more attention to your foyer now will help you create a warm and inviting entrance for everyone.

The way you decorate this room determines whether your home will be warm and sincere or whether it is going to be cold and artificial.

Since it is the make-or-break transition area, your foyer has to be perfect. For you, this means a welcoming sight that signifies you are home. For guests, it is an invitation to go in further. The floor area of a typical foyer is small, so elaborate designs will not run you up in costs. Go ahead, indulge.

One thing that your guests will immediately notice is your floor. Make sure that you give them something interesting to look at. Because a typical foyer tends to be small in relation to the rest of the house, decorating it can be straightforward. You also don't need to worry about material costs because the payoff will more than make up for it.

You can use different area rugs as a centerpiece instead. They are relatively inexpensive and the choices of modern area rugs out there is huge. You can have several different looks that you can change out whenever you want.

Ceilings

Plain white ceiling are not only boring, they are a nightmare to clean. You wouldn't want dirt to easily show - especially not on something that you can only clean twice a year or so. Have guests marveling at the interesting patterns and colors and not cringing at the cobwebs. You can go for a tropical theme by placing a ceiling fan with bamboo or fabric blades.

You can have a Mediterranean look with sheer white cloth draped around. The options available to you are virtually limitless. Don't stifle your creativity.

Walls

Walls

If you already have a centerpiece on your floor and something hanging from your ceiling, it's best to keep wall decorations to a minimum. One large painting is often all that you need. Lighting fixtures can be added for effect more than anything else. Look for those that cast interesting shadows and stay away from ones that give off harsh light.

If you have a hobby like photography, quilting, or embroidery, you might want to hang one of your works on the main wall of your foyer. If you have the talent, this is not the place to be shy.

There isn't a lot that you can do to accessorize the foyer. You may want to set a simple candle and a few small pictures on the table so your guests can look through them while they are waiting on something or someone. You will need an umbrella stand and a place to sit down to change your shoes.

Remember, be creative an place a little bit of a personal touch in this room since it is the first thing people see.
